UNIFE EMPHASISES THE BENEFITS OF INNOVATION IN SUPPORTING STANDARDISATION AT CEN-CENELEC CONFERENCE

He highlighted the Railenergy integrated research project which contributed to CEN/CENELEC’s standardisation regarding the calculation of energy consumption for rail rolling stock and specifications on reversible DC substations. He also mentioned two on-going UNIFE coordinated R&D projects —OSIRIS (Optimal Strategy to Innovate and Reduce energy consumption In urban rail Systems) and MERLIN (Sustainable and intelligent Management of Energy for smarter RaiLway systems in Europe: an INtegrated optimisation approach) which focus on the present challenges of energy management in the railway sector. Furthermore, he added that it is now time for a real step change in energy management technologies and practices. This can be achieved with the Rail Industry JTI Proposal currently under consideration by the Commission—SHIFT²RAIL—that will produce many outputs which will fill the aforementioned innovation gaps and also be used for standardisation activities
