EU Conference on noise in Europe
On 24 April, the European Commission organized a conference on the effects of noise and possible policy options to address them, in particular with regards to the transport sector.
The conference was opened by Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc who defined noise as an unfortunate side effect of transport success. She highlighted the key role that technology should play to tackle transport noise and in this respect, she mentioned brake blocks for trains and further transport electrification. Referring specifically to rail noise, she admitted that incentives are needed for the retrofitting of freight wagons, in order to preserve the competitiveness of the sector.
