EC Mobility Package – Europe on the move
On 31 May the European Commission published the mobility package called ‘Europe on the move’, though it might has well have been called ‘the road package’ as the part on rail is almost non-existant. This long-term strategy to turn these challenges into opportunities and deliver smart, socially fair and competitive mobility by 2025 is accompanied by a first series of 8 legislative initiatives specifically targeting road transport.
These proposals notably aim to improve the functioning of the road haulage market, enhance the employment and social conditions of workers, and promote smart road-charging in Europe. In particular, the review of the Eurovignette Directive could have a positive impact on rail freight business, if heavy goods road vehicles are charged for the external costs they generate (such as air pollution and congestion).
