    UNIFE highlights key industry issues at SIFER 2019

    From 26 to 28 March, UNIFE participated in the 11th International Exhibition of Railway Technology SIFER 2019, in Lille, giving us the opportunity to meet several members, potential new members and other rail sector stakeholders.

    Philippe Citroën participated in the Opening Ceremony and highlighted the challenges that face our industry in terms of market access and competition. “Although the world rail market should grow at an annual 2.7% through 2023, our industry is challenged by market access barriers and unfair competition on price. This calls for a true EU industrial policy,” he underlined.

    Laying tracks to continue the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF)

    The Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), along with the Structural Funds, has been the most important EU investment programme for transport projects, and rail has been biggest beneficiary of CEF funding in the current (2014-2020) period, with grants adding up to more than €16 billion in total.  Therefore, the negotiations on the continuation of CEF in the 2021-2027 period has been at the focus on UNIFE’s activities in the area of investment.

    Catherine Trautmann receives the European Railway Award 2019

    The 2019 European Railway Award was presented tonight to Catherine Trautmann, for her long-standing support of rail transport – including light rail in urban areas, high speed passenger lines and expanding the rail network across Europe in the framework of the European Union’s TEN-T Programme. The Award was handed over to Ms Trautmann by Philippe Citroën, UNIFE Director General, and Libor Lochman, CER Executive Director, during a special ceremony at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Brussels.

    The crucial role of rail in the decarbonisation plans of the EU

    The European Commission published yesterday its Communication ‘’A clean planet for all – A European strategic long-term vision for a prosperous, modern, competitive and climate neutral economy’ setting the long-term strategy for greenhouse gas emissions reduction. The Communication outlines the way forward for the EU climate, energy and transport policies and entails the EU strategy in line with the Paris Agreement that will bring forward a vision of a low carbon economy protecting the planet and its people.

    Global rail supply industry remains on a growth track

    The rail supply industry hit a new record last year, exceeding a total market volume of EUR 163 billion. In total the sector grew 1.2% per year between 2015 and 2017, with the services, infrastructure and rail control segments performing best. According to the latest World Rail Market Study, the outlook for the coming years is similarly positive – provided political efforts are intensified to achieve a level-playing field on international markets.
