Research overview

The railway supply industry invests over €1000 Million each year in research and development. New materials, signalling, telecommunication and information systems are the result of this effort. Small and medium sized enterprises are bringing much innovation to the sector.

Innovating and harmonising products and technologies are a necessity for the rail market to deploy all its potential, and for its stakeholders to deliver cost-effective services for intermediate and final clients. Rail transport in Europe is a future-oriented industry and is determined to offer an even more attractive, affordable, safe, clean, competitive and reliable transport mode.

This section presents the activities of UNIFE in European rail research by providing information on our involvement in FP7 projects, UNIFE’s role in ERRAC, (the European Rail Research Advisory Council), and general information about Horizon 2020, the European Commission’s new programme for research and innovation (2014-2020). This section also includes information about Shift2Rail, the recently launched Joint Undertaking for rail research which will invest no less than €920 Million over the period of 2014-2020.
